In a quote attributed to George Orwell in 1984, now suffering the challenges of disputed parentage, it is said that the most effective way to destroy people is to “deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history”. As of last week, whoever can correctly claim those words does so with growing support in the Florida legislature; as Bills are briskly moving forward in both the House and Senate that will provide some degree of protection for historical monuments and memorials in the State.

On Wednesday, March 1, Kim Kendall reported to Historic City News that she has filed to run for the State Representative, District 18 seat which encompasses northern St. Johns County. Kendall is a conservative Republican who puts God, family, and liberty first.  Representative Cyndi Stevenson currently holds the seat but reaches her term limit next year.

Last week, on Wednesday, February 15th at 11:00 a.m. Historic City News subscribers attended when the City of St. Augustine marked Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles’ 504th birthday with a brief wreath-laying ceremony at the base of his statue in front of City Hall, located at 75 King Street.

Historic City News received a Tuesday press release from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ office, calling on the legislature to adopt a bill making it easier to sue the press. The release followed a roundtable discussion with the governor and media critics in Hialeah Gardens.

Last Friday, January 20th, Historic City News learned of the retirement of K-9 Deputy Maverick from the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office.  Maverick is an 11-year-old, dual-purpose Belgian Malinois, born January 29, 2012.  He has served with honor and distinction since 2014.

Historic City News made a request to the “Open Government” desk within the Executive Office of Governor DeSantis on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 9:47 a.m.  We requested a copy of any applications received by the governor’s appointment office from persons asking to fill the vacancy created by the death of St Johns County Commissioner Paul M. Waldron.

Historic City News was informed by the City of St Augustine Beach that longtime commissioner, Margaret England, has retired from City service.  At its final meeting of the year in December, the City Commission presented a plaque to Commissioner England in appreciation for her 14 years of service to the city.

Yesterday Historic City News reporters watched as St Johns County local hero, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, laid into the federal government and Democrat-run states during the inauguration speech at the historic Old Capitol Building in Tallahassee.
