In 1738, in Spanish Florida, former slaves escaping their English masters founded Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, a settlement charter by Florida’s Spanish Governor, which is today known as Fort Mose.
St Augustine holds a unique place in the history of African-Americans in North America as the location of the first legally sanctioned free African-American town in the nation; Kathy Catron, Director of Communication for the St Augustine Ponte Vedra Visitors and Convention Bureau, told Historic City News this morning.

Candidates: Make response time the first priority

In light of the recent advances regarding the plan to create a new fire station that will combine our county and city fire and emergency rescue services, two fundamental issues arise, tax dollars and response times. A new city fire chief will be appointed soon and I feel assured that so much positive cooperation will continue. The current level of coordination between our county and city emergency resources, the chiefs and personnel is nothing short of superb.
Following extensive investigation of an incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 21st, Historic City News has been informed that the hunt is on for a 26-year-old St Augustine man; who police say, struck one law enforcement officer with his vehicle, and attempted to hit at least three others.
Historic City News was notified that 51-year-old John Edward Osgood, was arrested on third-degree felony charges yesterday afternoon for failure to properly register as a sex offender.
Historic City News learned that traffic has resumed in northwest St Johns County this morning after a man was struck and killed while attempting to cross the traffic lanes of northbound I-95 near International Golf Parkway at mile marker 324. He was trying to assist his daughter-in-law, 61-year-old Patricia Ann Harris, who resides at 2925 7th Street, north of SR-16 in St Augustine, with her disabled vehicle when the crash occurred; at about 5:33 a.m. this morning.
