As health restrictions begin to ease in Florida, Bishop Felipe Estévez of the Diocese of St. Augustine announced to Historic City News earlier today that he has approved safety guidelines to provide direction and recommendations for clergy as the diocese moves toward resuming public Mass and the sacraments in its parishes on the weekend of May 16-17. Weekday Masses can resume May 18.
Danielle Anderson, Byway Administrator for the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, informed local Historic City News reporters that her organization was one-of-two National Scenic Byways in Florida to receive recognition. Their video project, “Capturing the A1A Byway Story”, part of the Roadmap to History video series in development, was selected for Honorable Mention by the National Scenic Byway Foundation on April 23, 2020.
St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and The Beaches Visitor and Convention Bureau updated local Historic City News reporters that, in light of the Covid-19 coronavirus and the CDC’s guidelines for gatherings, live events previously scheduled for the next few weeks have been canceled, postponed indefinitely or rescheduled for a later date.
Historic City News was notified by the Florida Department of Transportation Public Information Officer, Allen Nelson, that traffic will be impacted at the following St Augustine and St Johns County locations where roadwork is being conducted.
On April 25, 2020, the Saint Augustine Tea Party conducted a protest at the intersection of US-1 South and SR-312. Participants included people ranging in age from their 20’s to their 80’s, according to Tea Party Chairman, Lance Thate. The Saint Augustine Tea Party has been active in St Johns County for over 10-years.
Ponte Vedra Boulevard Pavement Management Project
As part of the St Johns County Pavement Management Program, Ponte Vedra Boulevard will be milled and resurfaced from Corona Road South to SR-A1A beginning Monday, May 11th.

During yesterday’s regular meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, St Johns County Land Management Systems Director Gail Oliver, brought forward a resolution for approval to rename Poplar Avenue on Vilano Beach to Vivian Browning Avenue to honor Browning’s years of dedication and contributions to the community.
