St. Johns County Christmas Holiday Office HoursAll departments of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, St. Johns County Administrative offices, and the Pet Center, have reported to Historic City News that they will be closed Monday, December 25 and Tuesday, December 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday.
The Historic City News crime desk received word that a Jacksonville man violated a protection order Sunday; he was arrested and taken to jail where he was held overnight until a bond hearing yesterday morning.
Tuesday evening, December 19th, Historic City News readers are invited to the Plaza de la Constitucion to attend a special surprise ceremony honoring “Miss Carrie” Johnson hosted by St Augustine Police Chief Barry Fox.
Volunteer Coordinator Shannon Rininger informed local Historic City News reporters that the 2017 Northrop Grumman “Excellence in Volunteerism” award program is making a $5,000 grant to the Friends of the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas Research Reserve.
An important part of the City of St. Augustine’s response to increased panhandling activity in the downtown area is to document that activity, and the city is seeking the assistance of Historic City News readers to build that record.
Las Posadas celebrates 400-year-old Hispanic Christmas tradition

Last Saturday was the second annual celebration of Las Posadas del Viejo San Augustine along St George Street in the historic Colonial Quarter.
Anastasia Boulevard businessman Bruce Maguire tells Historic City News that merchants along the Anastasia entrance corridor to St Augustine want to be included in the city’s Nights of Lights activities. He says that he and wife Virginia Whetstone are setting an example with three of their properties and he hopes that others will follow suit.
Monday’s meeting of the St Augustine City Commission included a discussion on how to legally justify a tougher panhandling ordinance, presented by Constitutional Law Attorney Michael Kahn of Melbourne, Florida.
