Sweeny Named Mayor of St Augustine Beach

The City of St Augustine Beach announced to Historic City News this week, the appointment of Beth Sweeny as its new mayor.  Sweeny aims to strengthen regional partnerships, manage costs, and to enhance pedestrian and bike-friendly initiatives.  Outgoing mayor, Dylan Rumrell, who has served on the City Commission in St Augustine Beach since 2019, and as mayor for two years, was widely recognized for strengthening partnerships between the City of St Augustine Beach, St Johns County, and neighboring City of St Augustine.

On Thursday, December 4, 2025, the St Johns County Sheriffs Office confirmed to Historic City News that the “heavy law enforcement presence” on I-95 near Mile Marker 323 was the result of an attempted traffic stop gone bad that spiraled into a full-on manhunt spreading east across International Golf Parkway to US-1 near Abbotts Way.

Supreme Court disciplines nine Florida lawyers

Historic City News received the following summary of disciplinary orders issued against members of The Florida Bar between September 18, 2025, to November 25, 2025.  The Florida Supreme Court in recent court disciplined nine attorneys, suspending eight, and reprimanding one.  Court orders are not final until time expires to file a rehearing motion and, if filed, determined. The filing of such a motion does not alter the effective date of the discipline. Disbarred lawyers may not re-apply for admission for five years. They are required to go through an extensive process that includes a rigorous background check and retaking the Bar exam.

Police losing top leader: Michaux retires

St. Augustine Police Chief Jennifer Michaux announced to Historic City News today that she will retire from the St. Augustine Police Department on January 13, 2026, winding down a distinguished 30-year career with the department.  Upon her appointment to the position in 2021, Chief Michaux made history as the first female Chief of Police for St. Augustine.
