Gov. Charlie Crist quietly signed legislation yesterday that will start Florida back on the path to higher property insurance premiums after what some argued was a failed experiment with artificially low rates in the wake of monster hurricane seasons.

In an editorial that appeared in the Charlotte Sun yesterday, the newspaper’s staff took the position that their county commission should force Charlotte County Sheriff William Cameron’s hand with regard to his proposed annual budget.
Right now, the concealed weapons and firearms licensing program is backlogged and overloaded, due in part, to the refusal of budget officials and the Legislature to allow the Division of Licensing to use its own trust fund money to hire more employees and expand/upgrade equipment.

With confidants of Governor Charlie Crist saying over the weekend that the governor plans to announce this week that he’s running for U.S. Senate instead of seeking re-election, the 2010 governor’s race starts today.
