This morning at 8:30 a.m., Historic City News received word that a 41-year-old Jacksonville bicyclist traveling north on SR-A1A was struck and killed by a St Augustine driver in the area of Guana River Road.

A clerk working at Circle K gas and convenience store, on SR-16 along the I-95 corridor, called the sheriff’s office late Tuesday evening to report that a man entered the store and went directly into the bathroom, where he locked the door and remained for about an hour. The employee requested the man leave the restroom and property, but he refused to respond or leave.

Valsartan, the active ingredient in brand name Diovan, quickly became one of the most widely prescribed medications in the treatment of heart failure and hypertension (high blood pressure) after the active pharmaceutical ingredient became available off-patent. In the last week, three of the generic manufacturers; Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare and Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd., were asked by the US Food and Drug Administration to recall their valsartan products due to detection of a cancer-causing substance.

Executive Director Bryan L. Shorstein reported to Historic City News, that 38-year-old James Colley Jr. of St. Augustine was convicted on 2-counts of first-degree murder, 2-counts of attempted first-degree murder, and 3 other felonies, this morning in one of the worst crimes in recent memory in St. Augustine. The jury deliberated for two hours before they found Colley guilty on all counts.

Historic City News has learned that the County is already aware of our reader’s concerns regarding vehicular access between Crescent Beach and Fort Matanzas. They have shared the following information in response to your common concerns.

TECO Peoples Gas Company advised local Historic City News reporters that they are in the process of making emergency repairs to a natural gas line that runs beneath Hypolita Street in downtown St Augustine. The repairs necessary may not be complete before Friday, according to the advisory.

Historic City News readers will find that, starting today, Monday July 9th and continuing through Saturday morning July 14th, parking on King Street between St. George Street and Charlotte Street will be prohibited between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

The City of St. Augustine’s Planning and Building Department reported to Historic City News and local media that they were notified late on Tuesday, July 3, that the project team working on the rehabilitation of a commercial building at 9 Aviles Street had developed “concerns” regarding the building’s stability.
