Offices for the City of St. Augustine lost the ability to send e-mail last Sunday night at the height of Hurricane Irma, according to a report received by Historic City News from Public Affairs Director Paul Williamson.
Hurricane Irma has left residents soaked, frustrated, and, some tell Historic City News, worried about the future. Irma whipped trees out of the ground and poured more water into homes and businesses that were just getting back to normal after Hurricane Matthew.
Business owners began removing plywood from their storefronts on Wednesday, many anxious to see how well the interiors survived the high winds and flooding visited on St Augustine by Hurricane Irma this week.
Historic City News editor Michael Gold remarked that he never thought he would see it, but in Flagler county four men were arrested yesterday; two by Flagler Beach police and two by sheriff’s deputies, for violations of the posted curfew.
Historic City News learned that St Augustine Mayor Nancy Shaver had the opportunity to meet with our US Congressional team at the Emergency Operation Center earlier today to discuss St. Augustine’s experience during Hurricane Irma and our current recovery activities.
City manager John Regan reports from the St. Johns County’s Emergency Operations Center to Historic City News this morning that Florida Power and Light has restored power to 3,790 customers as of 8:00 a.m. All total, there were 9,200 FPL customers in the city who were without power. Maj. Gen. Michael Calhoun, the Adjutant General of Florida, told local Historic City News reporters that there are currently more than 8,000 Soldiers and Airmen conducting search and rescue operations, supply distribution points, and shelter management operations throughout the state in support of local and state agencies recovering from Hurricane Irma.
Sheriff Shoar reported the first fatality related to Hurricane Irma occurred Monday night.
