It’s still a little early, but St Augustine’s mayor, Nancy Sikes-Kline, can’t wait to inform Historic City News that she has selected two honorees to share the stage and commence the official beginning of 2025 Nights of Lights. The annual event was welcomed in 2003 when the mayor themselves made the ceremonial gesture of “flipping the switch” to turn on the Plaza Christmas tree lights.

The crowd of “gun toting” citizens, expected by some Historic City News readers, never showed up – at least not since last month’s official announcement by Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier that 50-year-old laws on the books in the state were unconstitutional as written and not in accordance with language contained in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.
In Florida’s national parks that detail slavery and other controversial topics, Historic City News has learned that certain exhibits have been flagged for review by the National Park Service under a presidential directive called “Restore Truth and Sanity to American History.”
Daniel “Dan” Holiday, 89, of St. Augustine, Florida, passed away April 27, 2025, at his residence. He was a native of Owls Head, New York, and resided in St. Augustine for over 65 years. Dan is survived by his wife, Candace Carroll of St Augustine, and daughter Elizabeth van Rensburg of Palatka.
Historic City News readers can celebrate Confederate Memorial Day, the official state holiday, tomorrow on Saturday, April 26, 2025, amongst the beauty of the ancient oak trees laden with Spanish moss and the peaceful waters of Trout Creek along CR 13 North in St Johns County.
In a developing story originating from a social media post made by The Southern Group, a founding partner in the political lobbying firm, John Edwin Thrasher of Fleming Island, is apparently “battling cancer” and receiving treatment at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.

On February 17, 2025, several hundred anti-Trump protesters demonstrated at City Hall in St Augustine, Florida. On March 4, 2025, members of a Communist faction of the Democrat Party, which promotes continuing support for the Ukrainian war, held an additional demonstration in front of the Castillo de San Marcos. Most recently, on March 26, 2025, another anti-Trump event was held at the Castillo de San Marcos.
