Editorial: Thanksgiving history not as advertised

Overlook all the Christmas advertising that started showing up on Halloween morning, but there is another holiday enjoyed by nearly everyone in the country and perhaps my favorite — Thanksgiving.



The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve is registering volunteers for a Beach Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, November 19th from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the North Beach Access Parking Lot and needs available Historic City News readers to help.
St. Johns County Continuum of Care invites all Historic City News readers to participate in this year’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week event to be held at Dining with Dignity, Wednesday November 16, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the corner of Bridge Street and Granada Street.
St Augustine Mayor Nancy Shaver has continued a holiday tradition by naming Police Chief Loran Lueders and Fire Chief Carlos Aviles to actually “flip the switch” that turns on the lights that kick off the 23rd annual Nights of Lights celebration.
For Historic City News readers planning to attend, the location of the conference on Historic Preservation, Building Codes and Resiliency hosted by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, the City of St. Augustine and Flagler College has been moved.




Historic City News readers can witness the closest full moon of 2016 this morning and it is also the closest full moon to date in the 21st century. When a full moon makes its closest pass to Earth in its orbit it appears up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter, making it a “supermoon”.
