After a couple of weeks to get the doors open and work the kinks out, Historic City News met with Culver’s owners Garth and Lisa Darton of St. Augustine at their new location open from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily at 3433 US-1 South. Monday January 18, 2021 was the official launch date for the St. Augustine “fast-casual” restaurant known for its Wisconsin-style Butter Burgers, cheese curds and frozen custard desserts.
Historic City News subscribers are invited to join City officials in St Augustine on Saturday, February 20, at 12:00 noon, at the corner of Bravo Street and Weeden Street in Lincolnville for an unveiling ceremony honoring Carrie Johnson, lovingly remembered as the Voice of “Lincolnville”. During its Monday January 13, 2020 meeting, the St Augustine City Commission voted to celebrate Johnson’s life by renaming Bravo Street (between Riberia Street and Sanford Street) to “Carrie Johnson Way”.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement to Historic City News after voting to acquit former President Donald Trump. In that statement, he explained his view of the attack on the Capitol on January 6th as well as his reasoning based on his understanding of the United States Constitution, trials by the Senate, and political overreach at the hands of moral opportunists trying to bully a former president of the United States.
In honor of Black History Month, Historic City News would like to outline St Augustine’s Emancipation history with a special focus on the Lincolnville neighborhood. Included are recommendations for lodging, restaurants, and cultural activities, provided by the St Johns Cultural Council.

I am a native Floridian. A St Augustinian, to be exact. When the world was young, my business took me to Georgia where I had occasion to travel to a few large cities as well as a state-full of small rural communities. After all those years spent growing up here, the southeastern-most state in the nation, it was during those seven years in Georgia that I learned something else about me. I am also “a Southerner”; a heritage to be celebrated.
St Johns County Clerk of Court Brandon Patty is on a mission to gain an additional county court judge; a measure he says will help cure “unacceptable delays” in our local court system.
The Florida Department of Transportation is scheduled to temporarily close the I-95 at SR-206 entrance and exit ramps overnight Sunday, January 31 and Monday, February 1 from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., weather and schedule permitting. The overnight closure will allow crews to resurface the asphalt pavement on the ramps and SR-206 within the interchange limits.
Former Mayor Nancy Shaver may be one of Historic City News’ best qualified sources of current information and most familiar with the resiliency issues facing St. Johns County. While in office, she traveled as part of a Florida delegation to the Netherlands to learn first-hand about technological solutions to sea level rise, including resiliency measures for nuisance flooding and storm surge.
