Legislature in session: Law and order issues
Historic City News is watching the issues in front of Florida’s House and Senate that may affect us here at home, and the topics on the Legislature’s law enforcement and justice agenda include whether or not local police should be allowed to use drone aircraft for surveillance, implementing a possible concealed weapon ban at public events and a ban on loud protests at military funerals.


Historic City News local reporters have learned that the current contract between St Johns County and County Attorney Patrick F McCormack expires on April 15, 2013; and, when the county commission meets on next Tuesday, the item will be taken up for discussion.
There was little doubt by Historic City News reporters that former St Augustine city commissioner Donald A Crichlow had the advantage over the dozen or so other applicants who expressed interest in being considered to fill the remaining two years of resigned commissioner Bill Leary — and, last night, it was only a matter of minutes before the decision was finalized.
Historic City News readers will have two meetings of the St Augustine City Commission to attend on Monday afternoon — prior to the regular at 5:00 p.m. business meeting, commissioners will meet in a workshop at 4:00 p.m. to discuss what some residents believe is the misuse of the PUD to circumvent protections afforded by city zoning.
The City of St Augustine has the opportunity to replace outgoing commissioner Bill Leary on Monday night; or at least to discuss potential candidates during the public business meeting — as of the distribution of the agenda, ten have so far expressed their interest in serving the two years remaining on Leary’s term.
The historic St Francis Barracks parade grounds will be the backdrop when Colonel James Eifert receives his promotion to the rank of brigadier general on Friday afternoon in a military ceremony held at 82 Marine Street in St Augustine February 8, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
St Johns County reported to Historic City News that Kevin Roberts has recently been recognized twice – first as “Case Manager of the Year” by the Florida Coalition of Children, and this week as St Johns County’s “Employee of the Year”.
The question on many Historic City News reader’s minds this morning, after Bill Leary’s short-notice resignation from the St Augustine City Commission yesterday afternoon, is, “what’s next?”
