Sheriff attempts misappropriation of law enforcement funds

Historic City News learned Friday that St Johns County Sheriff David B. Shoar has apparently attempted to misappropriate $10,000.00 in public funds making a material misstatement that the use of those funds by a third-party organization complies with the requirements of state law.  To further conceal the misappropriation sought by the sheriff, the request appears only on the “consent agenda”; recommended by administrative staff for approval without public comment or board discussion.

Historic City News was notified by Florida Department of Transportation Public Information Officer, Monica R. Reifeiss, that traffic will be impacted at the following
St Augustine and St Johns County locations where roadwork is being conducted.

Be alert to lane closures and temporary detours, as well as increased congestion in these areas. FDOT employees and contractors will be working on the roadways and need your full attention.

Depending on how long you have lived in St Augustine, Historic City News readers will refer to St Augustine’s only “skyscraper”, a six-story bank building located at 24 Cathedral Place, by a different name.  But, as of Tuesday, January 30, 2018, the current event venue with individual office spaces above, has been sold.

Special rules for transient sexual offenders and predators

Under Florida law, a sexual offender or predator who does not have a physical home with an address is considered “transient”, subjecting the offender to more restrictive registration requirements than those with physical home addresses. Among other requirements, such offenders must report to the sheriff’s office every 30 days instead of only twice per year for offenders or quarterly for predators. Historic City News wants our readers to know the requirements.

After 27 years as St. Augustine’s city archaeologist, recently retired Carl Halbirt will return to become the latest recipient of the Order of La Florida during a presentation by the city commission on Monday February 12th. The ceremony will begin at 4:00 p.m. and be held in The Alcazar Room, 75 King St. Historic City News readers are invited to attend.
