Among Monday’s activities commemorating the birthday of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a gathering at the site of the confederate veteran’s memorial in St Augustine’s Plaza de la Constitution.  Historic City News local reporters interviewed Harold Kenneth (H. K.) Edgerton who was holding what he called a Table of Brotherhood ceremony. Edgerton said, “I am here in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to fulfill his dream on his birthday.”

Trooper Wilburn A. Kelly never thought for a moment when he left his home in St. Augustine on Saturday, March 23, 1974 that he would have seen his wife and daughter for the last time. Kelly had served with the Florida Highway Patrol for 22 years at that time. 

During a ceremony Wednesday afternoon, the Florida National Guard’s 211th Regional Training Institute campus will be renamed in honor of Major General Douglas Burnett, who served as 20th Adjutant General of Florida from November 2001 to June 2010.  Historic City News will attend.

Are you ready for the madness of youth basketball to return this spring? The St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department reported to Historic City News that the youth basketball league is ready to tip off another exciting season for athletes ages 9-14 years old.

This afternoon, a homeless veteran who used to hang around St George Street in downtown St. Augustine, and who had no record of a family, received a burial with full military honors thanks to a member of the St. Augustine Police Department.

Historic City News was notified by Florida Department of Transportation Public Information Officer, Allen Nelson, that traffic will be impacted at the following St Augustine and St Johns County locations where roadwork is being conducted.

The Waterworks Building on San Marco Avenue will be opened for a docent-led walking tour on Saturday, January 25th.  There is no charge for admission, however space is limited and registration is required in advance.

Cheryl Freeman, director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of St Johns County, reported to Historic City News that the St. Johns County School District Volunteer Services department will be hosting a Mentor Fair on Wednesday, February 5th from 8:30am – 11:30am, at the Fullerwood Center Auditorium, 10 Hildreth Drive in St. Augustine.
