“Outsiders” win – Sanchez out

During the tabulation of last night’s ballots in the Republican Primary, of 16,888 ballots voted in the District 2 race, 39-year-old Jeb Smith, a fifth-generation farmer, won with 7,286 (43%) votes. Community activist, advocate for children’s education issues, and a former Air Traffic Controller, Kim Kendall, came in second with 5,363 votes (32%).

Juvenile Justice boots Youth Services International

Historic City News has learned that the private company, Youth Services International, can no longer respond to a current invitation to negotiate the contract for the St. Johns Juvenile Correctional Facility Florida because the Department of Juvenile Justice has canceled a contract with the controversial operator of a 40-bed residential facility in Santa Rosa County.

Birchim appointed City Director of Planning and Building

St. Augustine City Manager John Regan announced to Historic City News that David Birchim has been promoted to the position of Planning and Building Director. Birchim, a near 17-year veteran of the department, has been serving as interim director since the announced retirement of Mark Knight. The promotion is effective today, Tuesday, August 26.

St Johns County Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes told Historic City News editor Michael Gold that if 30% of St Johns County’s registered voters cast a ballot in the Primary Election August 26th, she will be pleased. That number may be wishful thinking.
