The Republican Club of Greater St. Augustine is hosting Candidate Series 2008 Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the St. Augustine Yacht Club,

Republican candidates for the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, District 1, Cyndi Stevenson and Albert J. Abbatiello, will be the guest speakers.

Shoar to speak to Coquina Veterans

Coquina Veterans have invited several other veterans groups to meet and hear Sheriff David Shoar on Wednesday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m. at the Coquina Crossing community clubhouse.

The Sheriff is scheduled to speak about his office’s role in handling homeless St. Johns County veterans, veterans returning to the workplace and what he sees as law enforcement’s role in assisting veterans.

Southwest fire threatens neighborhoods

Smoke filled a large portion of downtown St. Augustine yesterday as firefighters brought brush fires under control in the area of Vermont Heights that were threatening Coquina Crossing and adjacent neighborhoods.

Fueled by high winds and dry conditions, St. Johns County firefighters brought in heavy equipment to battle the blaze whose source is still under investigation this morning.

Traffic stop leads to trafficking charges

A Thursday afternoon traffic stop by Deputy Sheriff Ryan J. Smith quickly escalated into two felony and two misdemeanor arrests when it was discovered that the driver of the vehicle was in possession of marijuana and a large amount of cocaine, according to a report filed with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Historic City Media verified that Grady Ja’Vonne Smith is still in custody tonight in lieu of $50,900.00 bail on charges of driving while license canceled suspended or revoked, possession of cannabis – less than 20 grams, manufacturing or delivery of drug paraphernalia and trafficking in cocaine.

Cultural film benefit May 19th at Gypsy

“Magicians” will be shown on Monday, May 19 as the next movie for the Cultural Film Series presented by Gypsy Cab Company and The St. Johns Cultural Council.

Better known as “Dinner and a Movie”, the night has proven to be so popular that the sponsors have agreed to continue the series which serves as a benefit for the Cultural Council.

County investigates dog-fighting case

St. Johns County Animal Control has seized seven pit bulls, one German shepherd along with dog-fighting equipment and other evidence following an anonymous request for an animal cruelty investigation on Knowlton Street in West Augustine according to an media advisory received by Historic City Media this afternoon.
