Historic City News was informed that tomorrow, Tuesday, February 21, the City of St Augustine will fly the American flag at half-mast in honor of former City Commissioner and Mayor Greg Baker.  This is part of the City’s protocol to honor deceased former city commissioners and other notable figures.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs are officially headed to Super Bowl LVII after both teams won their respective conference championship games on Sunday. Teams are off next Sunday in preparation for one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Super Bowl LVII kicks off at 6:30 pm EST in the host city of Glendale, Arizona, Sunday, February 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium.

Historic City News has learned that on January 22, 2023, 86-year-old Randolph Fay Brunson, Sr., passed away peacefully at Bailey Center Hospice and Palliative Care in St Augustine. 

On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Historic City News subscribers are invited to attend and participate in an open house devoted to the planning and future development of multiple St Johns County parks.

Historic City News was informed that a team from the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program was working on December 5-6 at the scene of a shipwreck recently discovered in Daytona Beach Shores. The wreckage began appearing after Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, but it has been partially buried on and off due to the tides.

Kirk Lyons, a spokesman for the not-for-profit organization Save Southern Heritage Inc., informed local Historic City News reporters that prior to the kick-off of today’s football game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Baltimore Ravens, a private airplane towing a banner proclaiming the message, “Put the Monuments Back” will fly over the fans at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.

Nancy Quiñones, the spokesperson for the Puerto Rican Resources Center and Chamber of Commerce in Jacksonville, reported this month’s successful Puerto Rican Parade and Festival in St Augustine. This year’s theme was Bringing the flavor of our Island “La Isla del Encanto”.  The celebration was held at the St Johns County Fairground in Elkton on Saturday, November 19, 2022, and was a free event.

Communications and Events Coordinator for the City of St Augustine Beach, Melinda B. Conlon, informed local Historic City News reporters that the City will celebrate this holiday season with the Third Annual “Light Up the BEACH!” events, kicking off with Beach Art Walk and ending with a New Year’s Eve Fireworks show.
