Although qualifying for election to hold county offices is held from noon, June 8, 2020, through noon, June 12, 2020, Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes told local Historic City News reporters that, pursuant to Section 99.061(8), F.S., her office technically began accepting qualifying papers beginning May 25, 2020, even though the office was closed for Memorial Day. Today Chris Strickland and Rob Hardwick each appeared at her office, eager to get their paperwork in the queue to run for sheriff.

Arts on Douglas and the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Volusia County have invited Historic City News subscribers who are Florida artists to submit entries for their annual themed exhibition Endless Summer. Paying homage to the 1960s cult classic film of the same name, this fun, upbeat exhibition is a visual exploration of the summer season and all that it entails.

Based on my 34 years of experience in law enforcement, working for two of the country’s largest police agencies in command-level, supervisory positions, as well as the US Department of State, I would like to announce to Historic City News subscribers that I am supporting Chris Strickland for St Johns County sheriff.

A couple of weeks ago, Historic City News learned that the St Johns County Medical Examiner’s Office was back in the national news. Last time it was about the current and former medical examiners’ being disciplined by the state board over the homicide-turned-suicide finding of the death of Michelle O’Connell. This time, it was District 23 Associate Medical Examiner Deanna A Oleske writing to our newly minted county administrator, Hunter Conrad, on March 23, pleading, “Close the beaches. Please.”

St. Johns County Communications Specialist Kelsee Russler reported to Historic City News that local small businesses who have suffered a loss of revenue or disruption to their business operations because of the COVID-19 pandemic may qualify for short-term assistance through the “Back to Business Grant Program”.

You are patriotically invited to attend an open meeting of the Saint Augustine Tea Party on Tuesday evening, May 26th at 6:30 p.m., held at the Growers Alliance Cafe and Gift Shop, located at 322 Anastasia Boulevard. The evening’s special guest will be Stephen E. Grable, MD speaking about the Wuhan Coronavirus.

Lauren Ferro, St. Johns County Communications Specialist, announced to local Historic City News reporters that the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners will hold a special meeting beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, in the Auditorium of the County Administration Building located at 500 San Sebastian View in St. Augustine.
